Getting Started in Easy
The online coursework takes only a few hours to complete and can be done whenever it is convenient for you. You may start, stop, and return as often as needed, and your progress is automatically saved.
After completing the online training, you'll attend a single field training session where you'll learn the practical skills needed to officiate matches.
No prior refereeing experience is required. Training, mentoring, and support are provided every step of the way.

Field Training Sessions
Choose one of these field training sessions to register. Links will be available after July 1, 2026.

You must complete all online coursework prior to your training session.
Please wait to start any online courses until after July 1st, so your new license will remain valid through the end of 2027 rather than expiring at the end of 2026. Once we have the links, we'll send out an announcement for you to sign up and begin your online training.
Background: July 1st, marks the beginning of the new US Soccer Season. This means, if you become a referee after July 1, your are actually registering for the following year. For example, you take a class on July 25, 2026, you are registering for 2027 and your certification is good until Dec 31, 2027 (that is about 18 months). All of our classess are offered at the beginning of the US Soccer year which is also before the biggest season of the year, the Fall season. This is also when most of the Recreational games are happening which are the best games to learn how to referee on.
The Required Steps

STEP 1: SIGN UP IN THE LEARNING CENTER
- Navigate to https://learning.ussoccer.com/referee
- Select “Sign Up” in the upper right corner
- Enter your information (Must have referee’s email address as primary, parent’s email is secondary)
STEP 2: COMPLETE THE COURSE
- Select “Register for a Course” on the top navigation bar: The system will automatically load the Available Courses menu upon arrival.
- In the menu on the left side of the screen, select Grassroots – First-Time Referees
- Click “Go to Course List“
- Select a course with a field session that is in your area or a field session that you can attend and register for the course. VIEW COURSE LIST HERE.
- Complete the assignments BEFORE attending the field session. If assignments are not complete you may be transferred to a later course.
- Attend the field session.
- Your badge will be mailed to you upon completion of the field session.
